Welsh Lib Dem Assembly Member for Cardiff Central, Jenny Randerson AM today called on the Government to bring forward a debate on funding for the treatment of Alzheimer's following recent research into underfunding of research and treatment of dementia.
The dementia support service run by the Alzheimer's Society at Oldwell Court in Penylan is facing closure at the end of March. It is the only specialist support group for people with younger onset dementia in the local area and supports around 150 people at a cost of less than £20 000 per year.
"This service provides so much support for people who are having a very tough time, and costs such a small amount of money in comparison. It would be nothing short of tragic if we lost it because of penny-pinching.
"I was pleased to have the opportunity to raise this in the Senedd. The Government need to very carefully consider how they deal with the difficult funding issues Wales is facing.
"Scrapping services like this instead of investigating the issues of waste within the NHS is just not fair."
Ends.
