Randerson demands improved sexual health provision for Cardiff.

Sexual health services in Cardiff are overstretched

Welsh Lib Dem Health spokesperson, Jenny Randerson, today demanded that the First Minister improve sexual health provision for the people of Cardiff. Figures reveal that nearly a third of all who use sexual health clinics in the capital come from outside Cardiff, putting an immense strain on the already overstretched and underfunded service.

Following recent figures that show a 6% rise in the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) being diagnosed across the UK, with young people aged 16-24 accounting for half of all newly diagnosed, Jenny Randerson is worried that the number of STIs will increase if the government doesn't improve the sexual health services.

Jenny Randerson, Cardiff Central AM, said:

"What these figures reveal is that we have poor sexual healthcare provision in Cardiff and surrounding areas. People should be able to access this service in their own towns and not have to travel in to the capital for this vital check-up. The thousands of people coming to Cardiff for sexual health check-ups add even more pressure to our sexual health service.

"Having to wait a long time and travel far to go your nearest G.U.M. clinic does not encourage people to visit their sexual health centre for a check-up.

"Although I recognise that some people choose to access sexual health services outside their own area, some people are being forced to do so because of poor provision.

"Sexually active people, especially young people, should be encouraged to have themselves checked out regularly to reduce the possibility of an STI causing permanent damage.

"The number of people being infected with STIs is increasing and the situation is quite alarming.

"We need a revolution when it comes to sexual health in this country and I hope that Wales will lead the way on this. I will be pursuing this important issue with the Health Minister."

The table below shows information received from the GUM Clinic at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary including the Cardiff Area and the postcode bounds of areas outside of Cardiff.[1] The information shows the number of patients visiting the GUM clinic at the CRI for each of the three years.
