Cardiff is leading the pack in providing affordable housing

Cardiff Central AM Jenny Randerson has welcomed the praise that the Deputy Minister for Housing, Jocelyn Davies AM heaped upon Cardiff Council over affordable housing yesterday.

Speaking during Environment and Housing Questions, Ms Davies singled out Lib Dem run Cardiff Council for the amount of affordable housing it is providing.

The comments came after Welsh Liberal Democrat Social Justice Spokesperson, Peter Black AM uncovered figures showing that Cardiff was responsible for building 43% of all new affordable housing recorded in Wales during the last financial year.

Jenny Randerson said: "I am delighted that the Deputy Minister has recognised the great work that Cardiff Council is doing in ensuring there is enough affordable housing, particularly for young families trying to get a home.

"It is rare that a Government Minister will go beyond party lines to praise a Council being run by the Welsh Liberal Democrats so I particularly welcome the Deputy Minister's words about what a great job Cardiff Council are doing.

"Housing is one of the most serious and overlooked problems facing Welsh communities and I hope that other Councils are given the support by the Assembly Government to learn from the great work being done by the Liberal Democrats in Cardiff."

Notes:

1. Data provided by the Local Government Data Unit showed that of data held (20 out of 22 Local Authorities) Cardiff provided 346 out of 803 (43%) new affordable housing units in Wales provided during 06/07.
