WAG budget settlement

Councils across Wales have been given a poor settlement that will see key services placed under threat. Cardiff has a better budget settlement than a lot of other councils but it still receives the 2nd lowest amount of funding per head of the population in Wales.

Cardiff Central Liberal Democrat AM Jenny Randerson said "Cardiff has a better deal relative to the rest of Wales, however it is the worst settlement Cardiff Liberal Democrats have seen since they formed the minority administration.

In 05/06 there was a 4.5% rise for Cardiff

In 06/07 a 3.8% provisional settlement was outlined

In 07/08 a 4.9% provisional settlement was outlined

"The money given takes no account of the increased demands on social care. Cardiff Council. is trying its best to make efficiency savings but it can only make the money go so far. They are being asked to take on bigger and more numerous challenges without the extra money.

"This year the Labour/Plaid Government should be concentrating on bread and butter issues, otherwise key services like education and social services will be affected. This isn't the time to put free laptop gimmicks before teaching jobs and the health of the elderly."
