Labour haven't beaten bed blocking - Jenny Randerson comment.

11.37.24am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 26th Jun 2007

Official statistics show that bed blocking figures in Wales are slightly worse than this time last year. Welsh Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Jenny Randerson said:

"Bed blocking happens when a patient is delayed from moving to the next stage of their care, for example from a hospital bed to a residential home. It is causing major problems for our health service.

"These figures show that 642 people were waiting in May 2007, compared to 611 in May 2006. Whilst the waiting times have fluctuated, there has been no major change.

"Bed blocking means more hospitals are under strain because they can't meet demand. The knock-on effect is that ambulances have to queue to drop off patients, affecting vital emergency services in Wales.

"The previous Health Minister promised to work a day a week to tackle waiting times. Apparently he didn't make a big impact. I hope the new Minister Edwina Hart can do better for Wales."

Welsh Liberal Democrats proposed shared budgets between Health and Social Services departments so they can tackle the problem effectively together.

Notes/Nodiadau:

The statistics show the delayed transfers of care (all reasons and all Trusts in Wales) on the monthly census date.
