Free home care for the disabled - Jenny Randerson comment

2.50.32pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 15th Feb 2007

Speaking following the launch of the Leonard Cheshire Report 'Home Free', on free home care for the disabled in Wales, Welsh Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Jenny Randerson said:

"I want to welcome Leonard Cheshire's work in identifying the potential costs of providing free personal care for everyone who needs it in Wales. The report clearly demonstrates how the costs of personal care can push disabled people who need it into poverty, which explains why it is such an important issue.

"When Labour pledged to introduce free personal care for disabled people at the last election, they made a promise to do so without having thought the cost through properly. When they broke it, a year ago today, they failed the many voters who had supported them because of it.

"Welsh Liberal Democrats recognise the important benefits of Free Home Care for the Disabled. We will closely examine the work already done and seek to introduce a further package of measures working towards it.

"This may need the establishment of an Independent Commission to provide advice on the best way of achieving this in Wales. Providing free care for disabled people would be a long-term goal for a Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Government - we think it can be delivered feasibly by 2020."
